Advantages to Aquaponics

Aquaponics is a lot better than other solutions, here's how...

Reduced Water Consumption

In Aquaponics, water is constantly recycled and reused over and over again. The fish waste makes ammonia, which is converted into nitrates by bacteria. Usually water would have to be replaced or filtered with artificial filters as nitrates is poisonous to fish. However, in Aquaponics the water gets cycled through to the plants, which absorb the nitrates and uses it for nutrients. This filters the water, and it is sent back to the fish where the cycle repeats. Aquaponics is estimated to use 90% less water than traditional soil farming. 

Faster growing times & Better Produce

Regular soil-farming heavily relies on chemical fertilizers, herbicides etc. which reduces soil fertility and consumes the nutrients of the soil. This means many crops will struggle to grow and take a long time. Aquaponics on the other hand gives plants constant access to nitrate filled water, so they have plenty of nutrients at all times. This means plants are never struggling and can grow as fast as possible. Fruits and Vegetables are also larger, healthier and have very high nutritional value.

No Soil
 
No soil is used in Aquaponics, which has some huge benefits. Firstly, you don't have to use any fertilizers, which reduces both cost and chemicals being used. Another huge benefit is the lack of weeds. Since there isn't soil, there isn't anywhere for weeds to grow, which means less maintenance. No soil also means aquaponics is more environmentally friendly, as there isn't tractor and other machinery use for things like ploughing, fertilizing and cultivating etc.


Less Space Required

In aquaponics, plants aren't spreading their roots through soil and sharing the limited nutrients and water, like they are in soil. This means plants can be put closer together and more compacted then they would if they were growing in soil. This means you can fit the same amount of plants in less space, or more plants in the same amount of space compared to traditional soil farming.

It's organic.

​Aquaponics doesn't use chemical fertilizers, herbicides or fungicides (as mentioned above), so it's organic. Feeding the fish organic fish foods means the nitrates absorbed by the plants is completely organic, therefore not introducing any unwanted stuff to the plants.

Less Work

Once set up, Aquaponics systems essentially run themselves. They don't require weeding, so there is only a few simple tasks that have to be completed. The main task is feeding the fish, but the other tasks include a daily checking of the water temperature, a weekly check of the ph levels and quickly looking over the plants to make sure they are healthy.
